The Food for Development Office initiates and supports school milk programmes and integrated dairy development projects in developing countries. The aim of these projects is to achieve sustainable dairy development by promoting, developing and improving the local milk sector all the way from cow to consumer. |
By combining training and education of dairy farmers, equipment financing based on commercial terms and school milk programmes and by addressing all parts of the milk value chain, a base for sustainable economic development is established.
School milk programmes based on locally produced milk often work as a catalyst creating demand for locally produced quality milk and stimulating investment in the dairy sector.
DeLaval has a deep understanding of dairy farming, milk production and milk collection. Together with the knowledge offered by Tetra Pak in milk processing, milk packaging, food safety and distribution we are a perfect match to cover the entire milk value chain - from cow to consumer.
The Food for Development Office promotes and participates in public-private partnerships. Our integrated value chain model is a strong vehicle for sustainable profitable growth in developing countries. In 2005, DeLaval and Tetra Pak’s Food for Development activities was chosen by the UN's Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) as a good example of co-operation between FAO and the private sector. Further acknowledgement was given when the Food for Development programme was awarded the prestigious 2006 World Business Award in support of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. The award is presented on behalf of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), The Prince of Wales International Business Leaders Forum and the International Chamber of Commerce and it recognises the significant role business can play in implementing UN targets for reducing poverty.
Food for Development is currently involved in dairy development projects or school milk programmes in more than 40 countries worldwide.
For more than 40 years, Tetra Pak has been involved in providing milk to school children around the globe. Every year, more than 1 000 million litres of milk is delivered to schools, in Tetra Pak packages, to the benefit of around 40 million school children. Tetra Pak’s Food for Development Office (FfDO) is the mechanism where the extensive base of knowledge and experience gathered over the years in school feeding and agricultural development programmes it put to use. Together DeLaval and Tetra Pak participates in integrated dairy development projects addressing the entire dairy value chain from "cow to consumer".
