Groundbreaking innovation in dairy herd management

Danish dairy farmers are first in the world to use new monitoring system

A new system for dairy herd management called Herd Navigator™ is to be unveiled at the Agromek 2008 trade show in Herning, January 15th.

Herd Navigator™ is designed to address the future needs of professional farmers for proactive herd management. It has been developed in collaboration between FOSS, DeLaval and the Danish Cattle Federation and will be marketed and sold through Herd Navigator A/S, initially in Denmark only.

Dairy farmers using the system will be able to identify significantly more cows in heat than can be seen with visual checks. They will also be able to spot mastitis before it affects the milk and obtain an early-warning about metabolic disorders before actual symptoms become visible.

Jesper Bagge Pedersen, General Manager of Herd Navigator A/S said: “Herd Navigator™ is a huge innovation in dairy herd management because it automatically measures different components in the milk during the milking. Business results from the whole herd can be significantly improved because it is possible to act quickly regarding reproduction, health and feed requirements for individual cows.”

Herd Navigator™ has undergone field trials in Demark. Freddy Dransfelt, a dairy farmer from Bramminig, Denmark, who has tested the system said: “The higher number of cows you have, the more difficult it is to keep the grand overview and have the individual animal under control. With Herd Navigator™ you achieve both. It provides a security and freedom because I can check up on the cows even if I’m not the one milking all the time.”
