Climate challenge conference draws global audience Dairy farmers and leading speakers debate climate change issues
“No dairy farmer on the planet will be immune to the climate change issues,” says Jim Begg, Director General of Dairy UK and President of the International Dairy Federation, when asked to comment on why dairy producers should attend the dairy summit in Scotland this summer.
Dairy producers from all over the world are welcome to attend the summit, co-organised by IDF UK and DeLaval, and discuss one of the hottest topics today – food production and climate change.
A high profile team of environmental experts will present the major issues for discussion:
• Dr John Gilliland will identify the current challenges and opportunities directly relating to climate change’s effect on the environment for all land based industries and invite the audience to suggest actions that can be taken.
• Pierre Gerber, one of the main authors of the landmark FAO report entitled Livestock’s Long Shadow, will present its key findings to delegates to provoke further debate.
• Dr Gideon Brückner, the OIE (World Organisation for Animal Health) Deputy Director General, will present its most recent findings and he will also be setting out the emerging issues that he believes will have the greatest impact on the dairy sector for animal health and welfare.
• Professor Maggie Gill, the Chief Scientific Adviser for Rural Affairs and Environment for the Scottish Government, will present the latest activities in relation to agriculture of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
• Torsten Hemme, Head of the International Farm Comparison Network, will present an economic analysis of the challenges faced in relation to climate change.
• Roger Street will show 5, 10 and 20 year climate change models on the featured countries to enable farmers to plan how they can adapt their businesses to manage the different challenges that might arise.
