DeLaval develops new automatic milking concept for Australia

DeLaval and Australia’s FutureDairy will collaborate in developing a new concept for automatic milking suited for Australian conditions. The FutureDairy team, consisting of Dairy Australia, the University of Sydney, the Department of Primary Industries in New South Wales and DeLaval, will face challenges related to cost efficiency, throughput and pricing. Two DeLaval voluntary milking systems VMS units will be installed at a farm near Sydney and research will begin in March next year.

FutureDairy aims at helping Australian dairy farmers to manage the challenges they face during the next 20 years. The challenges are expected to be related to the availability and cost of land, water and labour, and the associated lifestyle issues. Their activities are structure around three priority areas – Forage, Feeding and Innovations. The objective of the Innovation module is to improve farm efficiency, labour management and lifestyle.

DeLaval was chosen by FutureDairy as a partner for the Innovation module of the project to develop a system that can meet the demands of the grassland farmer. Together they will face challenges such as increasing the throughput, cost efficiency, labour management and production efficiency. The project will run until 2009 and commercialisation will start in 2010.

“We are excited and honoured to be working together with FutureDairy to adapt our VMS technology to achieve a more flexible schedule for social activities and family life for the grassland farmers of the future. We are committed to providing dairy producers with solutions that give them control over their business and equally important, their lifestyle”, says Joakim Rosengren, President and CEO of DeLaval International AB.
