HPAI-infection risk increases when temps drop
As cold weather arrives and bird migration begins in many parts of North America, the threat of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) infections in cattle unfortunately increases. Thankfully, improved dairy-herd testing is leading to more targeted biosecurity guidance. DeLaval has developed its own biosecurity guidelines to help prevent HPAI infections on dairy farms and we offer some products shown to be effective at managing viral load at the milking point, on farm premises and for cleaning personal protective equipment (PPE).
As a leading dairy solutions provider, and as consumers, we are deeply committed to helping keep our food supply safe and protecting the livelihoods of dairy farmers.
Here’s what you need to know about HPAI prevention:
- Pasteurized milk remains safe. Pasteurization is 100% effective, so HPAI, also referred to as avian influenza A (H5N1), does not present a food-safety issue for pasteurized dairy products.
- The highest-risk pathway is the movement of lactating cows. Moving lactating cattle farm to farm poses the greatest identified risk of HPAI transition.
- Monitoring and testing matters. The National Milk Testing Strategy is critical for containing the virus, and bulk-tank milk can be used as a herd-level sample for surveillance.
- Farm biosecurity helps reduce risk of HPAI infections. Repeated infection patterns are linked to inadequate biosecurity. Our Biosecurity Guide can help.
- Protect yourself. The national herd testing program only tests milk from herds every three months. During this time, it is possible that an outbreak can pass through a herd and then test negative at the next test. Wearing the correct PPE on all farm visits can not only protect the next farm but protect yourself from becoming infected with HPAI.
- Use products authorized as effective in disinfecting HPAI. DeLaval offers effective hard surface sanitizers authorized for use against H5N1 virus. These products are only intended and authorized for use per label instructions:
- AcidiShine™: Clean in place sanitizer and disinfectant; conventional milking backflush cleaner (compatible with DeLaval rotaries, parlors and VMS™ V300 series)
