How we milk

Milking with the DeLaval VMS V300 is a highly automated, cow‑centred process designed to support productivity, animal welfare, and work efficiency. Using advanced sensors, robotics, and real‑time data, the system is designed to help ensure each cow is milked at an appropriate time, in a gentle and efficient way.

From automatic milking permission and precise teat preparation to Flow‑Responsive Milking and smart take‑off, the system is designed to adapt to the individual needs of each cow. Continuous monitoring and data driven insights support early health detection and consistent milk quality.

The result is a milking routine that benefits both cows and farmers, every day.

Automatically adapting to your herd profile, production targets and individual cows, your VMS is tailored to milk every cow at the right moment – helping you to optimise milk production, herd health, and operational efficiency.

Cow approaching the DeLaval VMS™ milking robot

A cow with milking permission is recognised and given access to the VMS via her RFID tag and the InControl app. The internal space of the VMS adjusts to her specific shape and size for comfort, and the correct feed mix is dispensed in the manger.

Cow identified and positioned inside the DeLaval VMS™ for access and indexing

Guided by InSight and historical teat‑mapping data, the VMS attaches the PureFlow cup: cleaning, drying, and preparing each teat individually. Pre‑milk and wash water are kept separate, and the PureFlow cup is flushed and dried before the next milking.

InSight scans and maps the udder in adaptive real-time, allowing fast and accurate attachment, even if the cow moves slightly.

DeLaval VMS™ attaching milking cups to the teats to start milking

By keeping the teat-end vacuum stable for every quarter from start to finish, Flow-Responsive™ Milking is designed to milk every cow faster, gentler and more complete – helping to ensure every cow is milking to her full economic potential, without compromising her health.

Four ICAR-approved milk meters monitor performance and udder health, and Mastitis Detection Index (MDI) identifies cows showing signs that may require early intervention. These and other advanced sensors work with DeLaval Plus to provide accurate, actionable insights.

Precise data from the milk meter during milking enables quarter specific cup removal as soon as the flow drops below the set threshold, designed to support healthier teat ends and smoother routines. Smart take-off can additionally remove the last slow milking cup to boost efficiency.

InSight’s accuracy enables a 99%* teat spray hit rate while keeping consumption impressively low. To support superior udder health and equipment reliability, our VMS compatible teat spray products are designed for precision and efficiency.

After milking, the cow exits the VMS and returns to her group, or is automatically sorted to a different area based on management decisions and milk‑quality checks. On exit, the VMS automatically cleans the floor (if selected) and flushes and cleans the cups, ready for the next cow.

DeLaval BioSensors Milk Cell Analysis (MCA)

When superb milk quality and early mastitis detection are important to you. MCA is an ultra-precise real-time somatic cell count (SCC) sensor that integrates with DeLaval Plus – putting accurate, actionable information at your fingertips. MCA aids you in milk quality control, and udder health and disease risk management. You control the SCC tests your herd receives, from always on to scheduled or event triggered, and everything in between.

  • Stronger mastitis detection, including early identification of subclinical cases that often go unnoticed.
  • Improved milk-quality control, supported by precise, reliable SCC data.
  • More informed udder-health decisions, powered by clear and actionable insights from every milking.
  • Flexible SCC monitoring options – continuous, scheduled, or event-triggered – giving you complete control and total peace of mind.

Accurate feed planning = improved everything

Body Condition Scoring

Body Condition Scoring is an automated system for monitoring the body fat reserves of dairy cows using a precision time of flight (ToF) camera. The camera captures detailed 3D images of each cow, enabling consistent and objective body condition scoring.

  • The system provides daily, accurate, and repeatable scoring, reducing reliance on visual assessment and manual evaluation.
  • Helps improve herd health by identifying cows at an early stage that may be at risk of ketosis.
  • Tracks body condition score trends throughout lactation to support reproduction, and feeding decisions.

Behaviour Analysis

By tracking rumination, eating time, activity, and behaviour through a smart ear tag, Behaviour Analysis helps you improve labour efficiency, performance, and overall cow health and welfare.

  • Accurate heat detection and optimal insemination timing.
  • Easy identification of sick or distressed cows.
  • 24/7 animal localization for faster, safer handling.

Farm Your Way

Batch or voluntary, 24/7 or twice a day, pasture or barn; you decide. It’s your farm and only you know what works best for your conditions and your animals.

Simple, open design

Free traffic

If you have the labour to bring in the cows, a free traffic system is ideal for retrofitting and providing cows with more freedom. Our planning teams will support you in achieving robot performance goals by balancing robot throughput with PMR and offering guidance on the optimal layout for post-sort options.

Milk first or modified

Guided traffic

Reduce the effort of fetching cows with a guided traffic system. DeLaval’s advisory and planning teams will help you retrofit or design a new barn to optimise your VMS, whether it’s by installing gates to direct traffic to the VMS or providing feed and post-sort options.

Keep a conventional barn

VMS Batch Milking

The VMS Batch Milking system replaces manual milking with automation. It includes a sort pen, shared group pens, and positions the VMS machines in the centre, in a designated milking area. VMS ensures consistent milking, collects data, and can milk up to 8 cows per hour.

Happy cows live longer

When cows stay healthier for longer, farmers can benefit from stronger profitability – and the environment benefits too. To ensure cow longevity it is crucial to provide excellent care from birth and to minimise the risk of diseases and at the same time maintain a solid reproduction. The four focus areas to maintain a high productive lifetime are:

  • Reproduction
  • Udder health
  • Hoof care
  • Milk production performance

VMS™ V300 and cow longevity

The nature of voluntary milking means cows on VMS follow a more natural behaviour and are more relaxed. VMS additionally empowers farmers with the insights to act early and decisively on matters that impact animal health and welfare. The DeLaval VMS™ V300 provides:

  • Gentle and consistent milking that protects udder health.
  • Early detection of health and reproduction changes.
  • Smart attachment capabilities that make it possible to continue milking cows automatically along the whole lactation.
  • Stress-free and cow driven routines that support overall longevity.
